Let me tell you about my unearned privileges.

In my experience as a student-when working in Social Justice, Diversity and Responsibility I'm told that we think first of the identities in which we are oppressed in some way. Rarely do we think of the identities that allow us privilege in society, those of which are often also unearned. Here is a brief listing of the privileges I experience all to often in my lifetime but think little of.

-As a person who identifies as heterosexual, I am allowed to marry whomever I want and in any state I choose.

-As a person whose gender identity aligns with the one I was born with, I do not have to face social and medical backlash. I do not have to explain what pronouns I want to be addressed with and people will often not think twice about seeing me hold my significant others hand in public.

-As a woman born into what many label as a 'minority' I am sought after for certain scholarships/programs and occasionally educational institutions.

-My key identities and core values are so common and accepted that I rarely need to explain them to people.

*Stay tuned for more! : D
